l In its judgment dated 27 September 2013 in writ petition (C) No. 161 of 2004, the Supreme Court directed that there should be a “None of the Above”
(NOTA) option on the ballot papers and EVMs. According to the directions of the Supreme Court, ECI made provision in the ballot papers/ EVMs for NOTA
option so that the voters who came to the polling stations and decided not to vote for any of the candidates in the fray, were able to exercise their right not
to vote for such candidates while maintaining the secrecy of their ballot.
