To capture the votes of such a large electorate across
India, a total of 1,32,560 polling sta ons, with 1,96,084
polling booths were set up. Of these polling sta ons
94,431 had one booth only. A total of 27,527 booths were
reserved for women. A total of 24,73,850 ballot boxes (8”
high x 9” long x 7 ½”wide) made up of 20 gauge steel were
used. Addi onally 1,11,095 wooden ballot boxes had to
be used in Madras state as one of the manufacturers
could not deliver on me. To avoid confusion, the ballot
boxes for Lok Sabha elec ons and Legisla ve Assembly
elec ons were differently coloured. Six hundred million
ballot papers were printed, from 180 tons of paper,
cos ng more than INR 10, 77,401.
